Where to Set

Place this set along established travel corridors like field edges, logging roads, or ridge lines where canines naturally trot. Look for existing prominent objects like a lone weed stalk, small stump, or fence post that stands out. The set should be highly visible to passing animals so they investigate and leave their own scent.

How to Build It

  1. 1Locate or place a prominent post along a known travel route.
  2. 2Dig a trap bed 6 to 8 inches away from the post, ensuring the bed is just deep enough so the set trap sits slightly below ground level.
  3. 3Securely anchor the trap into the bed and pack dirt firmly around the jaws so it does not wobble when stepped on.
  4. 4Sift dry dirt or peat moss over the trap, blending it smoothly with the surrounding terrain.
  5. 5Apply 5 to 10 drops of gland lure to the base of the post and a generous squirt of urine about 6 inches up the post.

Bait & Lure

High-quality red fox or coyote gland lure and fresh predator urine.

Gear & Traps

#1.5 to #3 coil-spring foothold trap, earth anchors or rebar stakes, trap tags, sifter, dry dirt or peat moss, trowel, lure, and urine.

Best Conditions

Highly effective during the pre-mating and mating seasons in late fall and winter when territorial behavior is at its peak.

Safety & Legal

Always affix a metal identification tag to your trap chain as required by most state laws. Adjust pan tension to 2-3 pounds to avoid catching non-target species like small domestic pets or birds. Ensure daily trap checks are conducted in accordance with local regulations to allow for safe, ethical dispatch or release.
