Dirt Hole Set
The most versatile land set there is — mimics a canine caching food to trigger a dig.

Where to Set
Set on field edges, trail intersections, fencerows, and travelways where predators already move. Pick a spot with a natural backing (clump, rock, post) at the 'ten o'clock' position so the animal approaches from the right angle.
How to Build It
- 1Dig a hole at roughly a 45° angle, 6-10" deep and 2-3" wide, next to a solid backing.
- 2Bed the foothold trap rock-solid one trap-jaw width from the hole edge, on the approach side.
- 3Place bait deep in the hole and add gland lure to the backing above it.
- 4Cover the trap with a pan cover and a light sifting of dirt, blended flush with the ground.
- 5Stake or anchor with an earth anchor and remove all excess dirt from the area.
Bait & Lure
Aged meat or fish bait placed deep in the hole, topped with gland lure at the backing. A drop of urine at the edge adds realism.
Gear & Traps
#1.75-#4 coilspring foothold (size to target), pan cover, dirt sifter, kneeling pad, dyed/waxed traps, earth anchors or stakes.
Best Conditions
Dry, workable ground before a freeze. Refresh after heavy rain. Cold, stable weather keeps lure working and animals traveling.
Safety & Legal
Check state trap-check laws (often every 24-48 hours). Use the required trap tag with your name/ID. Bed traps firmly to ensure a clean high catch and use pan-tension devices where required to reduce non-target catches.
