Overview
Striped skunks are frequent incidental catches around farms and field edges. Enclosed sets (cubbies, boxes, dog-proofs) are strongly preferred so the animal stays calm and spray is minimized.
Identification
- 4-10 lb with glossy black fur and white back stripes
- Small triangular head and bushy tail
- Short legs and a slow, deliberate waddle
- Distinctive musky odor near dens
Habitat
Field Sign
Behavior
Nocturnal, slow-moving grub and insect feeders that also raid nests and garbage. Non-aggressive but will spray when startled in the open.

Fur Handling
Handle carefully to avoid spray. Fur has modest value; skin cased and stretch, keeping the scent glands intact and away from the pelt.
