Overview
Common snapping turtles are large freshwater reptiles harvested for their meat as much as any 'fur.' They're taken with baited hoop/turtle nets and set lines rather than traditional fur sets, and are regulated under separate reptile/turtle rules in most states.
Identification
- Large 10-35 lb (occasionally more) freshwater turtle
- Rough, ridged carapace often covered in algae
- Long tail with saw-toothed ridge and powerful hooked beak
- Small plastron (belly shell) leaving legs and neck exposed
Habitat

Mostly aquatic, foraging along the bottom for fish, carrion, vegetation, and anything they can catch. Most active in warm water; largely dormant in winter.
