Overview
Gray foxes are timber-loving canines that stick to brushy cover and woodland edges. They respond well to food-based dirt-hole and cubby sets and are a common catch alongside coon and coyote.
Identification
- 7-13 lb with grizzled gray coat
- Rusty-red on the neck, legs, and ears
- Black-tipped tail with a dark dorsal stripe
- Only North American canid that regularly climbs trees
Habitat
Hardwood forests, brushy draws, and thick cover near water. They den in rock crevices, hollow logs, and brush piles.
Field Sign
Small dog-like tracks in cover, scat on trails and logs, and dens tucked into rock and root systems.
Behavior
Nocturnal and cover-oriented, working woodland edges and interior trails. Less wary than coyotes but still cautious around new scent.

Bait & Lure
Fox gland lure, gray fox urine, and food bait in a dirt hole. They favor sets tucked into cover rather than wide open.
Fur Handling
Skin cased, flesh, and stretch. Gray fox fur has moderate value with a coarse guard hair and soft underfur.
