Where to Set

Set in ponds, slow rivers, and marsh backwaters with soft bottoms where turtles feed. Place near muddy flats, drop-offs, and known basking areas.

How to Build It

  1. 1Bait the net with a secured bag of cut fish or chicken.
  2. 2Set the hoop net so the throat funnels turtles inward but leaves an air gap at the surface.
  3. 3Anchor and tie off to a bank stake or float so it can't drift.
  4. 4Position the top of the net above water so captured turtles can breathe.
  5. 5Mark the set and check frequently as required by law.

Bait & Lure

Oily cut fish or chicken parts in a bait bag or perforated container inside the net. Fresh, bloody bait works best in warm water.

Gear & Traps

Legal hoop/turtle net with an air gap, bait bag, anchor rope, stake or float, gloves.

Best Conditions

Warm-water months when turtles are actively feeding. Avoid cold water when turtles are dormant.

Safety & Legal

Turtle harvest is regulated separately from furbearers — confirm seasons, size limits, legal net types, mandatory air-gap/escape rules, and licenses. Frequent checks are typically required to protect turtles and non-target wildlife.
