Where to Set

Place floats in deeper water areas where bank trapping is difficult or water levels fluctuate wildly. Anchor them near cattail beds, feed beds, or natural travel corridors. Ensure they are sheltered from heavy wind or strong currents to prevent them from washing away.

How to Build It

  1. 1Construct a float using lumber or foam with resting shelves on either end.
  2. 2Anchor the float securely in the water using heavy cord and a cinder block or heavy weight.
  3. 3Bed a foothold trap on the submerged or semi-submerged shelves at each end of the float.
  4. 4Staple or secure the trap chains directly to the underside of the float.
  5. 5Place the bait or lure in the center of the float, forcing the animal to step on the trap shelf to reach it.

Bait & Lure

Apples, carrots, parsnips, or a commercial sweet muskrat/raccoon lure.

Gear & Traps

Wooden or PVC float platform, #1 or #1.5 foothold traps, trap chains, heavy anchor weights.

Best Conditions

Perfect for tidal areas or marshes with rapidly changing water levels where bank sets would wash out or dry up.

Safety & Legal

Float sets are excellent for avoiding non-target species like domestic pets since they are out in the deep water. Check local laws regarding exposed baits, required 24-hour trap checks, and ensure drowning rigs provide rapid dispatch. Traps must be securely fastened with a state-issued trapper ID tag.
