Where to Set

Set on flat, stable ground along travel routes, near dens, or against structures where nuisance animals are active. Place on a solid surface so the trap won't rock.

How to Build It

  1. 1Place the cage on level ground along an active route or near sign.
  2. 2Bait behind the treadle so the animal must step fully inside to trigger it.
  3. 3Cover the cage floor with dirt or leaves to hide the wire mesh.
  4. 4Set the door mechanism and test the trip pan for smooth action.
  5. 5Optionally cover the top with a board to make the animal feel secure.

Bait & Lure

Sweet or fishy bait (marshmallows, cat food, sardines) placed behind the trip pan so the animal fully enters.

Gear & Traps

Appropriately sized cage/box trap, bait, gloves, and a cover cloth for handling and transport.

Best Conditions

Year-round for nuisance work; fall/winter for fur. Cage traps are ideal near homes and where selective, non-lethal capture is needed.

Safety & Legal

Check relocation and nuisance-wildlife laws — many states restrict moving animals off-property. Follow check intervals, handle skunks carefully, and dispatch or release per local regulations.
