About This Lure

A weighted fly imitating aquatic insect larvae, dead-drifted along the bottom for trout.

How To Fish It

Cast upstream of target feeding lanes and allow the nymph to sink naturally to the bottom zone. Maintain a drag-free drift by mending your line upstream immediately after the fly hits the water to ensure a lifelike presentation. Keep your rod tip high and watch your indicator closely for the slightest hesitation or change in rhythm.

Retrieve Cadence

No active retrieve; focus on achieving a dead drift by mending line to eliminate drag and allow the current to carry the fly naturally.

Best Colors

Pheasant Tail— Versatile all-purpose pattern for most river conditions.
Hare's Ear— Effective in murky or stained water due to its buggy profile.
Copper John— Best for fast-moving water where a quick sink rate is required.

Sizes & When To Use

14-16Standard size for daily trout feeding patterns.
18-22Essential for selective trout during midge or BWO hatches.

Recommended Gear

4-5 weight rod with moderate-fast action, large arbor reel, weight-forward floating fly line, and 5X-6X fluorocarbon tippet.

Pro Tips

  • Adjust your indicator depth frequently to match the changing water depth.
  • Use a smaller bead head to avoid spooking trout in clear, low-water conditions.
  • Don't set the hook on every twitch of the indicator; look for a steady downstream pull.
  • Apply floatant only to the indicator to keep your line floating above the strike zone.
