All species

Big, wary, and worth the effort — a field-hunting staple.
Identification
- Black head and neck with a white chinstrap; brown body, pale breast.
- Deep, resonant honking; family groups fly in classic V formations.
- Sizes vary widely from small cacklers to giant resident birds.
Habitat
Agricultural fields (corn, beans, winter wheat), large water roosts, and golf-course-style green space.
Behavior
Roost on big water, feed in fields morning and afternoon. Highly patternable — scout the field they're using and set up where they want to be.
Decoy setup
Family groups of feeders and a few upright sentries with a wide landing hole off the blinds. Add flagging on the horizon to pull attention.
Calling
Clucks, moans, and honks to mimic a content flock; flag on the horizon, then go quiet as they commit.
