About This Lure

A jig dressed with bucktail or feathers that breathes with the slightest movement, great for finicky cold-water fish.

How To Fish It

Cast the jig toward structure or electronics-marked fish and let it sink to the bottom on a semi-slack line to maintain feel. Use short, subtle pops with the rod tip to imitate a fleeing baitfish or crawdad before letting it settle back into the strike zone.

Retrieve Cadence

A slow, agonizing drag along the bottom followed by a two-second pause and a sharp, six-inch twitch.

Best Colors

White/Clear— When targeting shad-oriented fish in clear, sunny conditions.
Black/Purple— Essential for stained water or low-light conditions to provide a solid silhouette.
Brown/Olive— Perfect for mimicking bottom-dwelling crawfish in rocky, stained, or deep-water scenarios.

Sizes & When To Use

1/8 ozBest for shallow flats, suspended fish, or when bass are feeding on small fry.
1/4 ozThe standard all-around size for deep-water dragging and maintaining bottom contact in wind.
3/8 ozIdeal for targeting deeper structure between 15-25 feet or when fighting strong current.

Commonly Rigged On

Direct tieBall-head jig

Recommended Gear

7'0 medium-light power, extra-fast action spinning rod paired with a 2500 size spinning reel spooled with 8lb high-visibility braid tied to an 8lb fluorocarbon leader.

Pro Tips

  • Always watch your line movement closely, as bites are often felt as a simple 'heavy' sensation rather than a hard thump.
  • Trim the hair slightly if the fish are short-striking to increase your hook-up ratio.
  • Avoid over-working the lure; the natural undulating movement of the hair does most of the work for you.
  • Apply a small dab of scent to the jig head to encourage fish to hold onto the bait longer on the drop.
