2026 regulation changes worth knowing before you scout public ground
Three states made changes this year that directly affect public-land plans:
MICHIGAN — The Lower Peninsula rifle line is gone, so straight-wall-only restrictions no longer apply. Muzzleloader season is down to three days (Dec. 4-6) and all deer hunting ends after Jan. 1.
INDIANA — You cannot take an antlerless deer with a firearm during firearms season on Fish & Wildlife-managed properties, or at Salamonie, Mississinewa, or Patoka. Centerfire rifles are now legal on public land. Portable stands and blinds are allowed on DNR properties in Reduction Zones from noon Sept. 1 to Feb. 8.
COLORADO — Gunnison Basin rifle elk (GMUs 54, 55, 551) is no longer over-the-counter, and GMU 97/99 boundaries moved. Update your GPS layers.
