Michigan just erased the rifle line — 2026 deer rules are a big rewrite
Heads up to anyone hunting Michigan this fall. The Natural Resources Commission approved a major deer package on May 13, and it changes how a lot of us will hunt.
The headliners: • The Limited Firearms Deer Zone (the "rifle line") is eliminated. All legal firearms, including bottleneck cartridges, are now legal throughout the Lower Peninsula. • Muzzleloader season went from 10 days to 3, is renamed the December Firearm Deer Season, and runs Dec. 4-6. In the Lower Peninsula any legal firearm works during it. • Early Antlerless Firearm now runs concurrent with the Liberty Hunt, Sept. 12-13. • Late Antlerless runs Dec. 7 - Jan. 1. The January archery and Extended Late Antlerless seasons are gone — all deer hunting ends after Jan. 1. • A one-buck rule hits the Lower Peninsula in 2027, plus an "earn a second buck" pilot in Zone 3.

Anyone in the old limited zone already rethinking their rifle setup?
Indiana hunters: county antlerless limits, legal rifles, and crossbows on the archery license
Indiana's rebuilt deer framework carries into 2026-27, and the antlerless piece is the one that trips people up.
What matters: • Statewide limit is 6 antlerless and 1 antlered deer outside Reduction Zones. • The old County Bonus Antlerless Quota system is gone. There's now a County Antlerless Bag Limit — your limit depends on the county you hunt, so check every county on your list. • Centerfire rifles with a bullet diameter of at least .219 in (5.56 mm) are legal on public AND private land. • Crossbows now use the archery license. • Muzzleloader minimum caliber dropped from .44 to .40. • You cannot take an antlerless deer with a firearm during firearms season on FWA properties, Salamonie, Mississinewa, or Patoka. • Drones and infrared can be used to RECOVER a deer, not hunt one.
2026-27 dates: Youth Sept. 26-27 | Archery Oct. 1 - Jan. 3 | Firearms Nov. 14-29 | Muzzleloader Dec. 5-20 | Reduction Zone Sept. 15 - Jan. 31.

Trail Cam Check: Pre-Rut Activity Heating Up
Checked my cameras this weekend and the scrapes are starting to pop. Saw two different bucks cruising during daylight hours yesterday. The pre-rut is definitely starting in the Midwest. What are you all seeing in your areas?
Best Broadhead for Big Bucks?
I've been shooting mechanicals for years but thinking about switching to a fixed-blade for better penetration on bigger deer. What's everyone's go-to broadhead for whitetails? I've been looking at the Rage Hypodermic and the Muzzy Trocar.
Public Land Strategy: Finding Unpressured Deer
After 3 seasons of hunting the same public land, I finally found a thick spot 1.5 miles from the nearest parking area. Saw 4 different bucks last weekend. The extra mile makes all the difference. Don't be afraid to put in the work!
