Kentucky: A Resilient Population
Kentucky has seen remarkable consistency in its whitetail deer population. In the 2024-2025 season, the state recorded an impressive total of 149,868 deer harvested, comprising 86,071 bucks and 63,797 does. This results in an average of approximately 1.3 deer per successful hunter, with 108,320 hunters participating. Regional analysis reveals that a striking 68-72% of antlered harvests were mature bucks, indicating strong adult representation in the population.
For the ongoing 2025-2026 season, initial reports suggest stable deer activity through September, October, and November, although comprehensive totals are still forthcoming. Kentucky’s wildlife management has supported ongoing population growth since 2011, maintaining balanced herds throughout the state.

Louisiana: A Steady Climb
Moving south, Louisiana’s 2024-2025 deer harvest totaled 143,527 deer, marking a 5% increase from the previous season. Hunter surveys indicate a total deer take of around 239,000. Within this harvest, bucks accounted for 56%, while does constituted 44%. Modern firearms saw the majority of takes, representing 81% of the overall harvest.
Leading the pack were parishes like Union, with 6,686 deer harvested, and Vernon at 5,896. Despite the upward trend in reported harvests over the past five years, concerns over Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) detections in certain regions have necessitated some precautionary measures, influencing management strategies for upcoming seasons. Participation from approximately 213,500 hunters remains steady, reflecting ongoing interest in the state's hunting opportunities.
Michigan: A Mixed Bag
In Michigan, preliminary data from the 2025 firearm deer season has indicated a harvest of 129,471 deer during the two-week period of November 15-30, which forms part of the broader season. This figure included 81,344 antlered and 48,127 antlerless deer. As of this point, the overall total stands at 214,968 deer, representing a 5.2% decrease from 2024. The Upper Peninsula experienced a 12.7% drop, while southern regions showed more stable harvest patterns.
Notably, counties like Kent and Jackson emerged as hotspots for buck harvests. Experts are monitoring these trends closely, as ongoing population evaluations in northern regions indicate potential declines. Efficiency in reporting remains high, with about 92% of harvest reports submitted in under five minutes.
Ohio: Strong Participation
Ohio's Department of Natural Resources has been proactive this season, offering weekly updates on hunting activity. Following last year’s harvest of over 200,000 deer—the highest since 2011—early indications for 2025-2026 suggest continued robust participation. The state is heavily engaged in population studies, with forecasts hinting at stable or increasing numbers across critical areas.
Hunters should be particularly attentive to updates concerning the breakdown of antlered versus antlerless deer as the season progresses. To stay informed, utilize Ohio's state hunting resources for the latest data and insights.
