Michigan's 2026 Deer Regulation Overhaul: Rifle Line Gone, Muzzleloader Cut to 3 Days

If you hunt deer in Michigan, 2026 is not a season to wing it. At its May 13, 2026 meeting, the Michigan Natural Resources Commission approved a package of changes that rewrites where you can carry a rifle, how long you have in December, and when your season ends. A separate set of changes lands in 2027 that will fundamentally change how many bucks you can kill.
Here is the whole picture, and what it actually means when you are standing in the woods.

The rifle line is gone
The headline change: the Limited Firearms Deer Zone in the Lower Peninsula has been eliminated.
For generations, Michigan hunters talked about the "rifle line" — the boundary that restricted southern Lower Peninsula hunters to shotguns, muzzleloaders, and a narrow list of straight-wall cartridges. That restriction is finished. Starting with the 2026 seasons, all legal firearms, including bottleneck cartridges, may be used throughout the Lower Peninsula. Firearms larger than .22 rimfire are now permitted statewide.
Practically speaking, the .243, .270, .308, and 30-06 sitting in your safe are now legal deer rifles in counties where they were not last fall.
One caution: this is a state regulation change. Local ordinances governing where you may discharge a firearm still apply, and DMU-specific antler point restrictions remain in place. If you hunt near developed areas, check with the township.
Muzzleloader season: 10 days down to 3
The Statewide Muzzleloader Season has been cut from 10 days to three days. It now begins on the first Friday in December, which puts it on Dec. 4–6, 2026.
It also has a new name — the December Firearm Deer Season — because in the Lower Peninsula, any legal firearm may be used during it. That is a meaningful trade. Dedicated muzzleloader hunters lost a week of low-pressure hunting. Everyone else gained a three-day rifle season in early December.
If December was your primary window, your plan needs to change. Three days does not leave room to wait out bad weather.
Late Antlerless opens earlier
The Late Antlerless Season now opens on the Monday following the December Firearm Deer Season and runs through Jan. 1. For 2026 that means Dec. 7 through Jan. 1.
It is open across the Lower Peninsula with two exceptions: DMU 245 (South Fox Island) and DMU 145 (North Manitou Island). DMU 115 (Beaver and Garden islands) is now open for both the early and late antlerless seasons.
January hunting is over
The Extended Late Antlerless and January Archery seasons have been eliminated. All Michigan deer hunting seasons now conclude after Jan. 1.
If you were one of the hunters who counted on a quiet January bow season after the crowds went home, that opportunity is gone. Everything you want to accomplish has to happen by New Year's Day.
Upper Peninsula changes
The antlerless access drawing in the U.P. has been eliminated. DMUs 351 and 352 are rescinded. U.P. hunters will only be able to use universal antlerless licenses in DMUs 022, 122, 155, 255, 121 and 055 during the 2026 season.

There is also a win for older hunters: residents with a valid senior deer license, senior deer combo license, or senior antlerless deer license may now use a crossbow during the Late Archery Deer Season in the U.P.
Liberty Hunt moves alongside Early Antlerless
The Early Antlerless Firearm Deer Season now runs concurrently with the Liberty Hunt on the second weekend in September. For 2026, both fall on Sept. 12–13.

The Liberty Hunt remains the youth and qualifying-disability opportunity it has always been, and running the early antlerless season with it consolidates September pressure into one weekend.
New license limits by DMU
The commission authorized the DNR to establish universal antlerless deer license use limits in consultation with the commission. These limits cap how many universal antlerless licenses a hunter may use within individual DMUs or counties, and they will be reviewed and published annually.
This is the change most likely to sneak up on people, because the numbers can shift year to year. Check the limits for your DMU before you buy.

Coming in 2027: the one-buck rule
This is the change generating the most argument at every deer camp in the state, and it is worth understanding now because it affects how you manage your property this year.
Starting with the 2027 seasons, in the Lower Peninsula only, buck harvest is limited to one buck per hunter. Upper Peninsula regulations remain unchanged in 2027.
Under the new structure:
- A single deer license will be valid for one deer with at least three antler points on one side, or for one antlerless deer.
- A combo license will allow one antlered deer and one antlerless deer, or two antlerless deer.
- Existing DMU-specific antler point restrictions remain in place.
The commission also approved an "earn a second buck" pilot program in the southern Lower Peninsula (Zone 3) starting in 2027. Hunters would have to harvest an antlerless deer first to become eligible for a second buck, which would carry a four-point antler point restriction. The DNR will name participating counties later and was scheduled to bring forward an order in July outlining the program parameters.
Because of the new one-buck limit, the commission also expanded exceptions allowing deer management assistance permits for taking antlered deer causing horticultural damage. Those require approval from wildlife and law enforcement supervisors.
What to do before opening day
- Confirm your firearm is legal where you hunt. State restrictions are lifted, but township firearm discharge ordinances are not.
- Rebuild your December plan around three days. Scout now for a spot that produces on a specific weekend, not across a 10-day window.
- Move your late-season goals to December. There is no January safety net anymore.
- Check antlerless license limits for your DMU before you buy, since they are published annually.
- Think about 2027 now. If a one-buck rule is coming to the Lower Peninsula, the buck you pass this year matters more.
The DNR is preparing the 2026 deer hunting regulations summary with complete season regulations. Digital versions come out first through the Michigan DNR Hunt Fish mobile app and at Michigan.gov/Deer, followed by printed copies at license retailers and DNR offices.
