In the high desert of Utah, tucked away in a quiet workspace, you will find Richard Taggart. For Richard, leatherworking isn’t just a trade; it is a direct connection to his past. He began his journey into craftsmanship at a very young age, learning the nuances of the hide and the rhythm of the tool from his grandfather. It was under his grandfather’s guidance that he developed the patience and skill required to turn raw leather into functional art.
Today, Richard continues that legacy through Taggart Outdoors. When you look at his work, you aren't seeing the output of a factory line. You are seeing the product of human hands, entirely tooled, carved, stitched, stained, painted, and finished without the aid of machines. Each piece carries the quiet history of a craft passed down through generations.
The Soul of Hand-Built Gear
In an age where speed and automation define most consumer goods, Richard Taggart chooses the difficult path. Every product created in his shop starts with authentic materials. He works primarily with 9-10 oz veg-tan leather, complemented by 2-3 oz chap leather for comfort and durability. The assembly is held together by white wax thread, finished with chrome fasteners, and sealed with resolene to ensure it stands up to the elements.
What truly sets hand-built gear apart from mass-produced alternatives is the intention behind every stitch. Without machines, Richard has total control over the integrity of the leather. He hand-stamps and carves every design, ensuring that the finished product doesn't just look good on a shelf, but performs reliably when you are miles deep in the backcountry.
