Pacific Halibut

Pacific Halibut

Hippoglossus stenolepis

All species

The undisputed king of the North Pacific seafloor, offering a formidable test of strength for any saltwater angler.

Typical Size

20 to 150 lbs, though trophies over 300 lbs are possible.

Prime Seasons

May through September, peaking in June and July.

Overview

The Pacific halibut is one of the largest flatfish species in the world, renowned for its incredible growth potential and culinary excellence. Anglers target these massive bottom-dwellers primarily for the 'tug-of-war' experience, as a large 'barn door' halibut can weigh several hundred pounds and requires heavy-duty tackle to successfully bring to the boat. They are prized not only as a trophy fish but as one of the most sought-after table fare species in the North American Pacific.

Identification

  • Asymmetric body with both eyes on the upper side.
  • Dark brown or mottled grey top side, white underbelly.
  • Large, wide mouth with sharp, conical teeth.
  • Diamond-shaped body with a slightly concave tail fin.
  • Lateral line has a distinct curve above the pectoral fin.

Habitat

Pacific halibut reside primarily on the continental shelf from California to the Bering Sea. They prefer sandy, gravelly, or muddy bottoms in depths ranging from 50 to 1,000 feet. While they remain near the bottom, they are highly migratory, moving into shallower coastal waters during the spring and summer to feed on baitfish, and retreating to deeper offshore waters during the colder winter months.

Diet & Forage

Opportunistic carnivores, their diet consists of sand lance, herring, octopus, squid, rockfish, and smaller flatfish. When targeting them, it is essential to 'match the hatch' by using large, oily baits that produce a strong scent trail, as halibut hunt largely by smell.

Depth by Season

Spring60-150 ftMoving into shallower coastal flats following spawning.
Summer100-300 ftFeeding aggressively on bait schools near tide rips.
Fall/Winter300-800 ftDescending to deeper shelf structures for wintering.

Best Lure Rigs & Setups

Circle Hook Bait Rig

When: The standard approach for presenting large herring or octopus chunks.

Setup: 16/0-20/0 circle hook, 150-200lb mono leader, 1-3lb lead sinker depending on current.

Jigging Setup

When: Highly effective when halibut are actively hunting bait balls.

Setup: 16-24oz leadhead jig with a 10-12 inch soft plastic grub or shad tail, 80lb braided main line.

Trolling Spreader Bar

When: Used to cover large areas of flat bottom when fish are scattered.

Setup: Heavy duty spreader bar, 150lb fluorocarbon leader, large artificial squid or hoochies.

Best Knots

San Diego Jam Knot— Excellent for securing heavy fluorocarbon leaders to hooks and swivels.
Uni-to-Uni Knot— Reliable connection for joining high-test braided main line to heavy mono topshots.
