Wahoo

Wahoo

Acanthocybium solandri

All species

The ocean's fastest sprinter, the Wahoo is a prized pelagic trophy known for its blistering, drag-melting initial run and razor-sharp teeth.

Typical Size

20 to 80 lbs, with record specimens exceeding 150 lbs.

Prime Seasons

Year-round in tropical waters, with peak windows in the Atlantic/Gulf usually occurring in late summer through winter when seasonal currents concentrate bait.

Overview

The Wahoo is a highly sought-after game fish inhabiting tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. Known for its incredible speed, often clocking over 45 mph, it is one of the most exciting catches for offshore anglers. They are strictly carnivores and are famed for their aggressive strikes, often 'skyrocketing' out of the water upon hook-up.

Anglers target Wahoo primarily through high-speed trolling, which requires specialized tackle to withstand their crushing power. Their elusiveness and the challenge of keeping them hooked—given their soft mouths and extreme speed—make them a pinnacle species for big-game offshore sport fishing enthusiasts.

Identification

  • Long, cigar-shaped body with a tapered snout.
  • Remarkable vertical blue-grey bars along the flanks.
  • Sharp, triangular teeth designed for slicing prey.
  • A series of finlets on the top and bottom near the tail.
  • Highly retractable jaw structure.

Habitat

Wahoo are pelagic, roaming the open ocean, but they frequently congregate near temperature breaks, weed lines, and underwater structure like seamounts or drop-offs. They are migratory and often track with currents, preferring water temperatures between 70°F and 80°F.

Diet & Forage

They feed on smaller pelagic fish including mackerel, flying fish, sardines, and squid. Match-the-hatch tactics involve high-speed lures that mimic these fast-moving baitfish, often utilizing flashy skirted lures or ballyhoo rigged for high-speed towing.

Depth by Season

Spring/Summer0-30 ftFeeding in the upper water column along temperature breaks.
Fall/Winter30-100 ftOften found deeper near offshore structure or shifting currents.

Best Lure Rigs & Setups

High-Speed Wahoo Bomb

When: When trolling at speeds of 12-16 knots to cover ground.

Setup: Heavy-duty trolling rod, 80lb monofilament main line, 200lb wire leader, and a bullet-shaped chrome head lure with a heavy double-hook rig.

Planer Rig

When: Used to pull baits deeper in the water column while trolling at moderate speeds.

Setup: Heavy braided main line, #16-32 trolling planer, 50ft of 150lb fluorocarbon leader, and a skirted ballyhoo.

Live Bait Drift

When: When Wahoo are concentrated on specific humps or wrecks.

Setup: 50lb fluorocarbon leader attached to a wire bite-guard, 7/0-9/0 circle hook, and a live goggle-eye or speedo.

Best Knots

Haywire Twist— Required for connecting the wire leader to the hook or swivel to prevent the Wahoo's teeth from cutting the line.
Improved Clinch Knot— Standard for securing heavy monofilament to terminal tackle when high-strength security is needed.
FG Knot— Best for joining braided main line to a heavy fluorocarbon leader to ensure a smooth transition through the rod guides.
