Montana is a premier destination for cold-water fly fishing, boasting world-class 'Blue Ribbon' trout rivers like the Madison and Missouri. Beyond its famous streams, the state offers exceptional warm-water opportunities for walleye and pike in massive reservoirs and remote eastern plains waters.

Species & Seasons

Rainbow & Brown Trout

Open year-round on many large rivers; peak season is June through September. Bag limits vary significantly by water body.

Walleye

Year-round; primary locations include Fort Peck and Canyon Ferry Reservoirs. Standard limit is 5-10 daily depending on the district.

Northern Pike

Year-round; often no limit in the Western District to protect native species; 10-15 fish daily in the Eastern District.

Paddlefish

Highly restricted seasons in May and June; requires a special tag and harvest varies by river segment and quota.

Arctic Grayling

Mostly catch-and-release in the Big Hole River; open for harvest in specific high mountain lakes during standard seasons.

Chinook Salmon

Found in Fort Peck Reservoir; peak fishing occurs during the autumn spawning run using downriggers and jigs.
