Species & Seasons
Walleye and Northern Pike
The general inland season opens the second Saturday in May (Governor's Fishing Opener) and typically runs through February. Walleye daily limit is usually 6, but special regulations apply to many popular lakes.
Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass
Catch-and-release season begins in mid-May; harvest season opens late May. In the northeast zone, the season is strictly catch-and-release for part of the year to protect spawning beds.
Muskellunge (Muskie)
Season opens early June and runs through November. There is a statewide minimum size limit of 54 inches on most waters to ensure trophy potential.
Stream Trout
The winter catch-and-release season in the southeast begins in January, while the general harvest season runs from mid-April through mid-September.
Lake Trout
Summer season on inland lakes typically runs from mid-May through September; Lake Superior has specific year-round and seasonal zones for lake trout and salmon.
Panfish (Crappie, Sunfish, Perch)
Open year-round statewide. Many lakes have recently implemented reduced bag limits (e.g., 5 or 10 fish) to protect larger quality-sized panfish.
