I arrived in my stand on opening day of the NY firearms season and was unlucky to bump a large group of deer in the dark. After sitting the stand for a majority of the early morning sit only to see a couple of button bucks. At around 9:15 am I heard a deep grunt from behind my tree and observed a buck chasing three does up the ridge. I observed large G2’s and nice G3’s and immediately knew the deer to be a shooter and stopped analyzing the rack and prepared my Remington Chasis Pistol in 6.5 Creedmoor for an offhand shot. The deer was at 60 yards and the shot stumbled the buck. I quickly placed a second shot into the buck and he dropped in his tracks 50 yards from my tree. As the buck expired I was able to analyze his antlers and realize it was a buck I had at least 3 years of history with and two encounters. The best part of the whole thing was my father was hunting not 300 yards away from me and I got to enjoy the moment with the man that taught me everything I know about deer hunting. The buck was scored at the NY hunt expo in Syracuse and gross scored 172 4/8 and a main frame 9 pt with a 4 inch split brow and 5 sticker points totaling another 6 inches. The buck was named Longhorn due to his long main beams both measuring over 27 inches. The buck ranked as the #1 Gross typical harvested in NY for the year 2021 with a firearm.
